Who We Are

The Oil and Gas, Natural Resources, and Energy Journal (ONE J) focuses on all facets of the energy and natural resources industry—including oil and gas, wind and other renewables, water, and agriculture. Since ONE J began operation in the spring of 2015, its student editorial boards have published over 6,900 pages in eight volumes of scholarly articles and case summaries. Students publish a new ONE J issue online four times a year.

According to September 2023 statistics from Digital Commons, ONE J works have been downloaded 165,774 times from 195 countries since the journal’s founding. Readership for ONE J consists of scholars and practitioners around the world. The journal also hosts an annual symposium each spring.

Students at the College of Law are eligible to join ONE J during the summer before their 2L year. Rising 2L students may receive offers for membership based on either their performance in first-year classes or their written submissions during the annual law review writing competition. Rising 3L students and transfer students are also eligible for membership through the writing competition.

What's New at ONE J

ONE J's newest issue, volume 9, number 2, was published in December and features the 2023 Survey of Oil and Gas.  The Survey is a summary of oil-and-gas-related regulatory, judicial, and legislative developments covering twenty-six states, along with sovereign lands in the U.S.  It covers developments from August 1, 2022 through July 31, 2023. The attorneys of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC conducted the research and prepared the articles for this issue, with the editorial assistance of ONE J members and candidates.  The twenty-six Survey articles are available in PDF format at the Current Issues page.
