In Her Own Words: Taylor Crowell Discusses Her Legal Assistant Education at OU

March 23, 2015 | By Taylor Crowell, Legal Assistant Education Student

When I was starting college, my mom would tell me once I found what I love to do, become the best I can in that field. Throughout college, I always gravitated toward legal classes. When I got my first job as a Legal Assistant a few years later, my suspicions were confirmed: I knew this was the field for me.

Deciding to enroll in the University of Oklahoma Law Legal Assistant program was an easy decision. After doing some research online, I found the program’s website and immediately turned in an application. After speaking with the program director, I was even more excited to embark on the journey of becoming the best I can in my field.

This program is composed of dedicated professionals who are determined to teach students about their own experiences and ensure they get the most opportunities to succeed. Whenever I needed support or guidance, I knew they would go above and beyond to help me. The professors are eager to help and because of the small class size, each student gets one-on-one attention -- which creates a better understanding of the material. Also, the program is great for networking and learning about the various areas of law.

Not only is the faculty a key factor in the success of the program, but the courses offered are applicable in any legal job setting. After starting the curriculum, I noticed each class build onto the next. What I learned in one class created a foundation for the next class. This structure helps create a deeper understanding of the topics.

Students currently working as a legal assistant at a law firm will begin to notice the material from the lectures and homework coincides with their job. Many of the classes -- such as Introduction to Law, Legal Research, Legal Writing, and Legal Analysis -- teach the basics of working in a law firm. The subsequent classes will start to build on that foundation.

For those not currently working as a legal assistant, these classes will prepare them and give them more confidence when applying to and interviewing for jobs. Having this type of background knowledge in the legal field helps students stand out in a pool of applicants. Additionally, by studying the different areas of law, students have a better understanding of the type of law they most enjoy.

Although I had prior experience as a legal assistant, I am still learning new skills applicable to my current job. The classes offered in this program have helped me to adapt to challenges in the workplace by providing me with the confidence and the skills necessary to be a successful legal assistant.

I chose this program for its reputable and experienced faculty. I am challenged to reach my full potential by professors who want to see their students become leaders in the field. I encourage current and future to reach out to your professors with any questions or concerns about being a legal assistant. They offered me the support I needed to succeed and encouraged me to better myself, both personally and professionally. My success is a direct reflection of this program. It is only because of this program that I feel prepared and confident to continue on in my career. To all the future students who hope to become legal assistants, I highly recommend this program so that you, too, can be the best you can in your field.
