Who We Are

The Oil and Gas, Natural Resources, and Energy Journal (ONE J) focuses on all facets of the energy and natural resources industry—including oil and gas, wind and other renewables, water, and agriculture. Since ONE J began operation in the spring of 2015, its student editorial boards have published nearly 2,000 pages of scholarly articles and case summaries. Students publish a new ONE J issue online every other month, making the journal the most frequently circulated of OU Law’s scholarly periodicals.

According to statistics from Digital Commons, ONE J works have been downloaded over 21,500 times since the journal’s founding. In the “Energy and Utilities Law Commons” section of the Digital Commons site, seven of the ten most popular articles for August 2017 came from ONE J. The readership for these works consists of scholars and practitioners around the world.

ONE J is the first peer-reviewed publication of its kind in the nation. The journal also hosts an annual symposium each spring.

Students at the College of Law are eligible to join ONE J during the summer before their 2L year. Rising 2L students may receive offers for membership based on either their performance in first-year classes or their written submissions during the annual law review writing competition. Rising 3L students and transfer students are also eligible for membership through the writing competition.

What's New at ONE J

The November issue of ONE J is now available, featuring case summaries and three new articles from professors who presented at the journal’s symposium last spring. The articles explore issues concerning the global market for liquefied natural gas, the siting of carbon dioxide pipelines, and the “production in paying quantities” standard for oil and gas leases. The November issue is available for download at the Current Issues page.

ONE J’s September issue featured the 2017 Survey on Oil and Gas. The Survey is a summary of oil-and-gas-related regulatory, judicial, and legislative developments for twenty-six states and sovereign lands, covering developments from August 1, 2016 through July 31, 2017. The attorneys of Steptoe & Johnson PLLC conducted the research and prepared the articles for this issue, with the editorial assistance of ONE J members and candidates.

For the July issue, ONE J collected eight archived works by the “Deans of Oil and Gas Law,” originally published over a forty-year span. To honor participants in the journal’s inaugural symposium, the editors prepared a series of these scholars’ past works, broadening the digital reach of their analyses. The authors are Owen L. Anderson, Bruce M. Kramer, John S. Lowe, Patrick H. Martin, Phillip E. Norvell, David R. Percy, David E. Pierce, and Ernest E. Smith.

The forthcoming January issue will feature articles that were recently presented at the 2017 Kuntz Conference on Natural Resources Law and Policy. The journal’s members and candidates volunteered at the Conference in November and look forward to collaborating with the practitioners who headlined this year’s event.
